On January 27, 2021, the head of the foreign relations department of the Patriarchate of Moscow, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeev) of Volokolam, said in an interview with the Rompaya news agency that the Russian Orthodox Church recognizes the occupied territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as the part of the Apostolic Church of Georgia. He also noted that the Georgian Church received autocephaly from the Church of Antioch.
Hence the logical questions:
1. If the Russian Church is really sincere towards the Georgian Church and considers the occupied territories to be the canonical territories of the Georgian Apostolic Cathedral, why do the clergy of the Moscow Patriarchate serve in these dioceses, especially when the head of the Georgian Patriarchate’s sent the letter to the patriarchate of Moscow and demanded a response to the illegal and arbitrary services performed by the Russian clergy. As it is known, the Russian Church continues its spiritual occupation in two ancient regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali.
2. If Metropolitan Hilarion thinks that the autocephaly of the Georgian Apostolic Church came from the Orthodox Church of Antioch, why does the Russian Church occupy the 5th place in the Diptych before Georgia? It would be logical for the Russian Church to move to the 6th place and for the Georgian Church to take its 5th place.
These are issues that need to be addressed immediately.
